IMPORTANT MOD POST

I learned this from a mod in another community:

Something/someone is going around LJ and hacking accounts of users who mod large communities. After hacking the mod LJ, they go to the community, make a post with links, and then disable comments. They also delete all the community contents (as well as the contents of the mod LJs).

If you see a post in this community by any of our mods:

meetzemonsta
sandowl
ninjalie
bryany
art_witch
belcantin

SAYING THAT WE ARE CLOSING THE COMMUNITY WITH LINKS GIVEN IN THE POST...

1- DO NOT CLICK ON THEM.
2- EMAIL US, PM US, CALL US IF YOU KNOW US PERSONALLY. LET US KNOW ABOUT IT.
3- REPORT THE ENTRY TO LJ (CLICK ON THE FLAG BUTTON)
4- DON'T CLICK LINKS!!!

MORE INFO HERE: http://upstart-crow.livejournal.com/346623.html
This link is safe.

The screencap below is what the suspicious entry would look like:

That can make you paranoid, I mean what if this post is a fake? lol Oh lordy. I thought I heard about this on TV last night...they said it's on Facebook too.

That was my first paranoid thought too. Especially after the link and the note saying "this link is safe." I bet hackers do that too!

Exactly. I thought: you're not going to fool me MR HACKER IF THAT'S YOUR REAL NAME!

Thanks for posting this. This happened in another community I was in and it was really not a good thing.

Oh no, I co-mod 2 large Obama communities, and they're like historical archives. Do you mind if I lift this info to repost (changing the mods, of course)?

Sure, that's basically what I did from the mod I learned it from in ihearttattoos.

Thanks for the heads up! They did a clever job with that post, too. It looks rather genuine.

I dunno, I like to think that our lovely mods would have more personality and better grammar than that. :P
This is crazy. Glad word is getting round though.

Yeh, but to anyone newer who hasn't been around much? It could be deceiving.

It depends on how much gin we've been swilling!

This is why that snapshots thing in LJ is such a bonus. It can be incredibly annoying, but it has saved me having to click things, too.

Would changing passwords help any you think?
meetzemonsta
Mar. 5th, 2009 06:03 pm (UTC)
Maybe?

People are recommending that individuals set up a secret question on their LJ account that enables one to regain access if their account has been hacked.

How do you do that?

changing your password would help, so long as you changed it to a relatively secure one.

This means:
1) it should be at least 8 characters long.
2) It should use at least one character from 3 different character sets. i.e. lowercase, uppercase, number, symbol.
3) It should *not* resemble any dictionary words.

Optional: I don't know if LJ supports it, but, a passphrase is usually good. This essentially means a short sentence, with spaces. I don't know if LJ supports spaces or not, which would be the deal breaker.

You can make a pretty secure password by making a relatively easy sentence of at least 8 words, and then using the first letter of each word with some random capitalization and numbers thrown in.

This happened to my livejournal on Christmas. Basically somebody changed my password using an old email account that used to be associated with my livejournal, then deleted everything and left a single entry saying that I was getting rid of my livejournal, linking to a malicious (and Russian?) site.

was it a hotmail account?

that's what happened to this similar thing that was happening a few months ago.

i highly suggest anyone who has a defunct hotmail address that used to be linked to their LJ to go and unlink it.

I got three emails on Monday supposedly from a "friend" on Facebook saying there was a video to view. I did not do it, because I do not have that many friends on Facebook and it did not give the "friend's" name. Tuesday, I read on cnn.com, that it was a worm. Thing is, they made it sound like more than just getting into your account and deleting it. They made it sound like getting into your computer and being able to control anything on your computer, etc..

Thanks for the headsup! Good luck!

I've seen this happen to one friends personal journal and to one community I belong to. I've be on the lookout for this for months.

Archiving the journal helps also so if you do get hacked theres still a record of all the entries and it's just a tedious job of copy paste to put everything back. I try up archive my personal journal at least once a week. LJArchive is great in that it saves comments too.

birthcontrol got caught out by this a few weeks ago. If this does happen, you'll lose control of the moderation queue, but in general the hacker's not going to notice if you post a new post right above their evil little post that says FOR GODS SAKE DONT CLICK THERE.

(I'd also recommend archiving your userinfo, as it can be a real PITA to recreate - we're still missing things, I think!)
